Zo'n nieuw jaar is een mooi moment voor bezinning. Ik doe niet echt aan goede voornemens, maar heb wel besloten om te stoppen met dat gehannes met twee dezelfde blogs... Tijd voor grote schoonmaak! Ik neem afscheid van Gnoe's journal hier op livejournal. Belangrijkste reden: dat niet-leden tegenwoordig reclame te zien krijgen bij mijn blog (tot nu toe bleef het gelukkig redelijk beschaafd, 'Japanse meisjes' is het ergste wat ik heb gezien ;) Maar in Gnoe's Graasland heb ik bovendien meer mogelijkheden, waarmee ik jullie verder niet zal vermoeien ;) Ik moet daar nog een beetje beter indelen en opschonen, maar wees alvast welkom! Mijn Museumlog gaat trouwens voorlopig nergens heen ;)

Gnoe's Bookcrossing Adventures

	In de zomer heb ik me maar eens op Google Maps geworpen en een kaart aangemaakt voor mijn losgelaten Bookcrossingboeken. Het boek dat ik voorafgaand daaraan releaste (My Young Years) vroeg er gewoon om. Dat was namelijk in Elsenborn (in de Ardennen). Ja ook al is dat dichtbij, het blijft buitenland ;) De link met deze plek is dat ik in mijn jonge jaren al eens hier in de buurt was geweest: een themarelease dus. Bovendien is de Trouschbaum, waar ik het boek achterliet, een heel oud markeringsteken. De originele boom is echter omgevallen en dit exemplaar is dus relatief young. Ik zet al mijn boeken nu met terugwerkende kracht op de kaart - een hele klus maar ik ben er bijna! Het was leuk geweest om ook foto's toe te voegen.. alleen maakt dat een release wel heel bewerkelijk. Bovendien hoort een releasefoto meer thuis in de journal entry van het boek op mijn Bookcrossing boekenplank.
	Op mijn kaart vind je ook releases onder de noemer 'een vreemde eend in de bijt'. Die boeken heb ik niet zelf losgelaten maar dat heeft mijn Bookcrossing-Monopolymaatje Frakke-Per gedaan. Samen vormen wij het team de Ouwe gnoepers in het Monopolyspel dat is opgezet door iiwi. We hebben met z'n allen erg veel lol in dit spel! Afijn, in Elsenborn hebben we niet alleen een boek vrijgelaten maar ook heerlijk gewandeld: 10 km rond het meer van Bütgenbach en ook zoiets op het - voor publiek eigenlijk gesloten - Kamp Elsenborn. Heerlijk stil was het daar! Hee, misschien maak ik ook wel eens een map met mijn wandelingen... Zou daar een handige methode voor zijn, bijvoorbeeld door gps-data in te lezen? Alsof ik nog niet genoeg te doen heb, LOL!

Golden Oldie readalong: The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing

I really have to get away from this computer and do some serious reading! I had planned to join the The Golden Notebook Readalong Project that started yesterday, but I haven't finished my current book yet (Hitsuji o meguru bōken, or: A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami). I don't seem to get as much reading done as I used to these days :(

The Golden Notebook (by Doris Lessing, of course) was an important feminist book in its day, and I guess that's how it came on my wishlist 'to be read someday'. But I haven't really felt like it up until now (and I still don't to be honest). I'm afraid it will be difficult or boring... So I made it part of my personal 2008-2009 reading challenge. In the 'readalong project' seven female writers will read The Golden Notebook for the first time and blog about it. People like me can have their say on the forum. (Oops, that will get me behind the computer again ;) Well, I should at least try to read this golden oldie from a writer that won last year's Nobel Prize in Literature!

I am very grateful to Deepswamp from Sweden who made my challenge possible by sending me a bookcrossing copy of The Golden Notebook.

A dream come true: my second Postcrossing postcard came from Japan! I didn't even know I could receive another one until some more of the cards I've sent are registered. I sent a 'thank you' to Japan in return. And it's going well because I have also received a Florida Sunset from the US. All my cards can be found on a special Flickr page for Gnoe's Postcrossing!

Eindelijk heb ik mijn eerste matcha-experiment uitgevoerd! Ik wilde al heel lang iets bakken met deze groene poederthee (die eigenlijk is bedoeld voor Japanse theeceremonies), maar eerst moest ik het ergens zien te scoren en daarna een goede gelegenheid vinden om ermee aan de slag te gaan. Die deed zich voor bij onze laatste Twin Peaks Marathon sessie! Voor onze eerste bijeenkomst van 2 jaar geleden experimenteerden we met de originele Twin Peaks Cherry Pie waarvoor we Crisco nodig hadden en speciale zure kersen, zodat dit een toepasselijk moment leek voor een cake met bittere groene thee en zoete witte chocolade. Loopt het water u al in de mond? :) De foto bewijst dat het bakexperiment lukte en neem maar van mij aan dat-ie ook lekker was :) Dank dus aan La Tartine Gourmande voor het recept.

Wat zal ik volgende keer eens proberen te maken met mijn groene poederthee? Wie het weet mag het zeggen! En er kan ook worden nagedacht over een nieuw filmproject :)

Today I received my first postcard! Some kind of reward for finishing my grant request (in time ;) or consolation for the bad news I got (no, that had nothing to do with my job, LOL).

Anyway, I was very glad to find it in my mailbox! Now I have to wait until the cards I sent have been registered to get another one… Postcrossing is an exercise in patience!

I heard about Postcrossing on the Dutch Bookcrossing forum a while ago, but hadn't taken much notice. Then she told me about it last weekend when we had our final Twin Peaks marathon... Very enthusiastically! And from today I am officially a Postcrossing member :) This week I will send a postcard to another postcrosser in Finland. She likes to receive cards of buildings :) Well, I like historic stuff, so hopefully this a good one to send.

The building on the card still exists. It used to be a department store called Winkel van Sinkel and now it's a grand café and night club under the same name. In September it also houses the yearly Dutch Film Festival. Wikipedia will show you how the building with its caryatids looks today.

The picture on the postcard is from 1890 by a unknown photographer. It is viewed from our public library. I will try to make a picture from exactly the same spot, because I am really charmed by the idea of rephotography as is done by Mark Klett and people from the Tyrrell Today Flickr pool that make new pictures that look like the images from the Tyrrell Collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. See this great post and you'll probably be as amazed as I am :)

And all this is getting crazier by the minute: did you know there even is a Twin Peaks rephotography project? :)

Tiny Tom (of: de smaak van het verleden)

Ik heb een Tiny Tom gescoord: een mini-tomatenplantje om van te snoepen. Pure nostalgie, want 30 jaar geleden was ik daar helemaal weg van bij onze Indische buurvouw, mevrouw Brookman. Maar ik herinner me haar vooral door de geweldige groentekoekjes die ze maakte. Iedereen denkt aan maïskoekjes als ik daarover vertel, maar nee – dat waren het dus níet! Ik weet nog precies hoe ze smaakten en zou dolgraag het recept willen hebben, maar jaren speuren op internet heeft mij nog niet verdergeholpen. En zelfs de dochter van mevrouw Brookman weet niet waarover ik het heb :( Gelukkig weet mijn broer het wel, anders zou ik nog aan mezelf gaan twijfelen :) Hij at laatst gefrituurde kervel en zweert nu dat dat in de groentekoekjes moet hebben gezeten. Misschien was het een soort maïskoekjesbeslag met kervel en willekeurige kliekjes groente? De Nederlands-Indische keuken bestaat immers voor een groot deel uit koken met restjes :) Dat past dus goed bij onze hedendaagse pogingen duurzaam te leven ;)

Mevrouw Brookman: klein ('tiny'), jampotglazen, heugafelttegels op de keukenvloer, een rolveger en een formica keukentrap-annex-kruk waarop ik liedjes voor haar zong. Van Tante Hetty kookt spaghetti en Op het eiland van Sint Maarten woont de kat met zeven staarten, totdat ik te zelfbewust werd om zomaar bij de buren in de keuken te gaan zitten zingen :-o
Oei, wat is het allemaal lang geleden!

En nu ik het toch over smaken uit mijn jeugd heb... Naast groentekoekjes zou ik ook graag nog eens een Driemusketeersreep proeven, of 'Freshen-up!'; van die vierkante kauwgompjes met een vloeibare mint- of kaneelvulling. En dat voor iemand die al 15 jaar geen kauwgom heeft aangeraakt! :) Tja, een tomaatje is nou eenmaal gezonder...

Niet alleen de clematis staat prachtig in bloei, we zijn ook erg gelukkig met onze lupine! Nooit geweten dat één plant verschillend gekleurde bloemen kan hebben. Marvelous :)

Personal 2008 reading challenge

I promised to write about my 2008 reading challenge. I'll do it in English because I want this post to be available to international readers.

My challenge is to read 12 of 13 titles from the longlist of the Dutch election for Best Foreign Book that were already on my wishlist. So I will choose twelve books out of the next listing:

Up until now I've read three of them and handling the fourth so I'm not reaching my target of one book a month ;)

For four successive years now I have given myself a reading challenge. It usually just presents itself to me somewhere in the first few months :)

2005 really had three challenges: first to read a book from each decade from 1900 until 'now'. In that one I succeeded :)

Secondly I wanted to read a total of 15,000 pages in 2005... I failed that; with 14,767 I was just a few pages short. Thankfully I did accomplish my third mission to finish all Bookcrossing books on Mount TBR (To Be Read).

In 2006 I read 10 books with the numbers 0-9 in their titles:

Instant karma

Bookcrossing is instant karma! I just received a package from Taipei, containing Possession by A.S. Byatt as RABCK (Random Act of BookCrossing Kindness). Thank you so much Dauw! Your kindness followed just shortly after I had sent off Greenwich Killing Time to Canada, so like I said, it seems like instant karma :)

Possession is one of the books in my personal 2008 reading challenge. I thought I had already written a post about that but it seems not. Will do - soon - but for now I redirect all who want to know about this challenge to my Bookcrossing bookshelf.

At the moment I'm halfway another challenge book: The amazing adventures of Kavalier & Clay (by Michael Chabon). It's great! But 639 pages thick, so it will keep me busy for a little while longer. After that I plan to read Anne Enright's The gathering because it is this month's book for my virtual book club, the Boekgrrls. But after that... Possession it is!

In een groen, groen knollenland

Oeh, spannend: we hebben ons vandaag opgegeven voor de (kleine) groentetas van De Aardvlo! Dat is een biologisch-dynamische tuinderij in Amelisweerd (dus eigenlijk Bunnik maar DOMpeople zien dat gewoon als Utrecht ;) die bijvoorbeeld ook aan de Veldkeuken levert waarover ik vast nog wel eens zal posten.

Dit is weer een stapje in onze pogingen om duurzaam te leven en (dus) koken. Hoef ik niet meer telkens naar de groentekalender te kijken om te weten welke groente in welk seizoen thuishoort - op de aanbiedingen bij de supermarkt moet je daarvoor vooral niet afgaan.

Door een deelname-overeenkomst met Tuinderij de Aardvlo te tekenen word je als het ware aandeelhouder in de oogst van dit jaar. Oeps, dus we zitten er ook tot en met december aan vast! Dat wordt Googelen naar recepten als ik mijn knollen niet wegkrijg ;) En ik zal zeker ook aankloppen bij de Kookgrrls. Ik maak mij nu al zorgen om de eerste rabarber die ik zal tegenkomen... Ik gruwelde daar als kind van! Maar nu zullen we de uitdaging moeten aangaan :)

Het is spannend hoe we dit gaan volhouden. Jaren terug hebben we eens een Odin groentepakket geprobeerd maar we hielden dat niet lang vol. Het scheelt misschien dat we daarmee in de winter begonnen: het minst aantrekkelijke seizoen. Bovendien kon je de tas maar op één dag ophalen en dat is nu bij de Aardvlo wat ruimer. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte!

Philipp von Siebold

Philipp Franz von Siebold was de eerste buitenlandse arts die, vanaf 1823, in Japan een praktijk mocht onderhouden en de oosterse geleerden mocht onderwijzen in de westerse geneeskunde. Als arts mocht hij geen geld ontvangen maar in plaats daarvan kreeg hij vaak mooie geschenken.

Japanse verzameling

Eigenlijk is Von Siebold vooral bekend door zijn onderzoek naar de Japanse flora en fauna. In 1829 werd hij Japan uitgewezen op verdenking van spionage en hij vestigde zich toen in Leiden. De Nederlanders hadden in die tijd immers als enige handelscontact met Japan, vanaf het eiland Desjima in de baai van Nagasaki. Hier vandaan werd de Japanse cultuur bestudeerd en zo kon Von Siebold nog altijd Japanse planten, dieren en voorwerpen ontvangen. Een deel van de collectie die hij opbouwde is te bezichtigen in zijn voormalige woonhuis aan het Rapenburg in Leiden: het SieboldHuis. Maar ook in Naturalis, het Nationaal Herbarium en het Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde zijn restanten te vinden. Eigenlijk had deze post dus ook in mijn Museumlog gekund ;)

Blog from the dead

Maar wisten jullie nu dat Philip von Siebold himself sinds half februari een weblog bijhoudt? 182 jaar na dato schrijft hij dagelijks over zijn hofreis naar Edo. Mét afbeeldingen. Misschien was hij niet alleen de eerste westerse arts in Japan maar is hij ook de eerste blogger uit het hiernamaals? Of kennen jullie nog andere(n)?

Japanse markt

Tot slot nog een tip! In 2008 en 2009 zijn er verschillende activiteiten naar aanleiding van 400 jaar handelsbetrekkingen tussen Nederland en Japan. Op zondag 25 mei is er daarom van 12-17 uur een Japanse markt op het gedeelte van het Rapenburg waar in 2000 onze koningin (toepasselijk dat ik dit schrijf op Koninginnedag aangezien Beatrix verder niet vaak in mijn journal zal voorkomen), met de Japanse keizer en keizerin van het SieboldHuis naar de Hortus Botanicus wandelde. Lees er meer over bij de actualiteiten op de website van het SieboldHuis. Om 13 uur kun je daar een gratis concert bijwonen van het Dejima Ensemble, mits je je op tijd hebt opgegeven. Ik ben zelf wel van plan om te gaan want ik wil graag nog eens naar de Von Siebold herdenkingstuin in de hortus en ik moet voor 22 juni in het SieboldHuis ook nog de tentoonstelling Kyoto dolls: zoektocht door de leefwereld van de geisha bezoeken (zoals gemeld op mijn lijstje te bezoeken tentoonstellingen).

Hollandse Hanami

	Sakura-feest Gisteren hebben wij hier ons eigen *Hanami* gevierd: het feest van het 'bloesem kijken'. In Japan wordt dat jaarlijks gevierd als de kersenbloesem bloeit. Wanneer dat moment precies is (eind maart-begin april), wordt nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden via speciale sakura-voorspellingen na het weerbericht en op websites. Als het zo ver is trekt heel Japan naar buiten om met vrienden en familie of collega's te picknicken onder de kersenbloesem. De bloesem is maar kort op zijn top en staat daarom symbool voor de vergankelijkheid van de schoonheid en het leven. Genji Het bloesemkijkfeest werd voor het eerst genoemd in de oudste roman van Japan *Genji monogatari* (The Tale of Genji), van Murasaki Shikibu, ongeveer uit het jaar 1000. Een groot deel van dit (superdikke) boek heb ik in 2005 gelezen en daar ben ik blij om want ik herken daardoor veel in modernere Japanse literatuur, zoals boeken van Haruki Murakami of Taichi Yamada (welke auteurs ik graag lees). Maar dit terzijde. Hanami Wij hebben de mazzel dat we in een groene wijk van Utrecht wonen en omringd zijn door bloesembomen. Helaas zijn er afgelopen jaar een paar gekapt vanwege bomenziekte, maar daarvoor zijn andere (kleinere roze) in de plaats gekomen. We keken dus vol verwachting uit naar het moment dat alles hier in volle bloei zou staan. En deze week is het zo ver! Wat heerlijk dus dat we dit weekend mooi weer hebben, zodat we een Hollandse Hanami konden vieren in het park. Dat moest wel een beetje in Japanse stijl, dus met toepasselijke gerechten in de kleuren van kersenbloesem (roze en wit, groen voor het blad en bruin van de stam).


De picknick Om te beginnen hebben we het traditionele dango gemaakt, gestoomde balletjes van rijstemeel, kersensmaak en teriyakisaus. We hadden het nog nooit gegeten en wisten dus niet wat we daarvan konden verwachten. Ehm, hoewel ze naar ons idee wel zijn gelukt vonden we het eigenlijk niet te eten :\ De roze leken op grote hompen supertaaie kauwgom! Brrr, niet opgegeten dus. Tja, ieder bakavontuur kan mislukken. En gelukkig hadden we nog andere lekkere dingen! Heerlijke Hollandse frambozen, de black bottom cupcakes (ze smaken nog prima als ze uit de vriezer komen :), edamame oftewel gekookte sojabonen in de peul met zeezout (yummy), wasabi-erwtjes en sojacrackers, en Aziatische Sky Flakes toastjes voor de paddestoelen-cashewnotenpaté, een recept met silken tofu dat we een aantal jaren terug in Toronto hebben gescoord. Te drinken hadden we genmaicha thee en prosecco wijn met biologisch zwarte-bessensap, een soort kir royale dus :) Komende week komt er weer regen en wind, dus dan zal alle bloesem wel snel weg of lelijk zijn. Wat een geluk dat wij er nu volop van hebben genoten!

Black bottom cupcakes

Om niet teveel met mijn neus achter een beeldscherm of in een boek te zitten, probeer ik ook wel eens andere hobby's uit. Zoals tuinieren (op het balkon), of bakken. En aangezien ik al een poosje mijn zinnen had gezet op deze black bottom cupcakes, werd het vandaag cakejes bakken. Het handige van allrecipes.com is dat je de Amerikaanse hoeveelheden met één druk op de knop kunt omzetten naar Nederlandse. Alleen in de beschrijving moet je dan even opletten. Maar oorspronkelijk was ik als een blok voor dit recept gevallen op het blog Culinary Obsessed.

Ik heb de tip van 'jworth' op allrecipes opgevolgd en in plaats van water koffie gebruikt die ik van instant espresso maakte (Nescafé). Ook nam ik frambozenazijn in plaats van witte of appelazijn (beide had ik niet in huis) en heb ik gewoon chocolade in brokjes gehakt in plaats van chocolate chips. Daarvoor nam ik wel een reep met minstens 77% cacao.

Cakevormpjes

Het mooie was dat ik meteen mijn nieuwe hartvormpjes kon uitproberen (gekocht bij de Hema). En eigenlijk zijn die nog het beste gelukt! Nu is het zo dat je de siliconenvorm de eerste keer moet invetten en daarna niet meer. Argwanend als ik ben, wil ik dus eerst een tweede proefsessie uitvoeren voordat ik op grote schaal siliconenvormen ga inslaan. Maar bij een nieuw succes ga ik dat dus zeker doen.

De andere cakejes heb ik nu met gewone metalen muffinvormen gemaakt, maar daarin wel papieren cakevormpjes gezet. Dat scheelt afwas, we hebben namelijk geen afwasmachine! En het staat ook leuker - deze cups zijn wederom van de Hema, daar hebben ze nu eenmaal schattig spul (kawaii! in het Japans).

Zwarte kontjes

Wel, de cakejes waren heerlijk! Mooi donker van alle kanten en niet aangebrand, wat de titel misschien doet vermoeden ;)

Ik heb een deel ingevroren (als ik alles ineens zou moeten opeten dan kregen we hier Amerikaanse taferelen qua taille-omvang), en ik ben benieuwd of die na ontdooien nog net zo goed smaken. Maar ik heb daar goede hoop op want ze waren de volgende dag misschien wel lekkerder dan toen ze warm uit de oven kwamen..!

Wandelgrrls hiking from Rhenen to Veenendaal-West

	Yesterday the Wandelgrrls took advantage of the fine weather and walked the NS-wandeling Elsterberg (from Rhenen to Veenendaal-West). We had planned to do just 11 kilometers but when we got to the one and only bus-stop on the route, we really didn't feel like going home yet! So we decided to go all the way to Veenendaal-West (17,5 km in total). But first we had to take a break... Luckily we were only a few meters from hostel Stay Okay Elst :) Although it only has catering facility for guests, the personnel was friendly enough to give our little group a cup of coffee and some peanut cookies :)) Thumbs up for Stay Okay Elst!
And this might be a good moment to give some handy information to hikers who do want to stop after 11 km and want to check bus departure times in advance (like we had wanted to but not been able to): the stop is called 'Eikelkamp' in Elst. But you should consider that the last part of this hike is the most beautiful... We even saw a small deer but it was too shy to be photographed ;) So we had a great afternoon. Because of last week's rain there was one difficult part where we had to manoeuvre our way through some slush. But thankfully none of us got wet feet :) It's a pity I cleaned my shoes this morning otherwise I could have made a picture of their horrible appearance ;)

Last week my brother and I walked our tenth part of the Utrecht Path, from Amersfoort to the north of Baarn (14.6 kilometers - first time I've used our gps LOL). It was quite cold and we didn't meet any fellow hikers, although it was nice walking weather anyway. People were probably put off because there wasn't any sun, like the days before that. We enjoyed the real Dutch landscape too, which was mostly polder land.

We calculated that we have just four more walks to go and then our Utrecht Path project will be finished! It's been such a success that we decided to find a follow-up hiking project. We will probably choose the 'Groene Hart Pad' (192 km, that's thirty more than our Utrecht Path), because it's another 'circle walk' and it leads us through the area that we grew up in. We're nostalgic people ;)

November bento's

OMG I have this big bento backlog again! Of course our computer broke down (I won't tell you about the terrible service Apple gave us), but that's not really an excuse is it?

Well, I'll start off with bento #36: my Royal bento!
You might wonder why this bento is called 'royal' since it's not particularly rich, nor are there any crown jewels on view. But it does contain a lot of orange stuff and Oranje (= orange) is our royal family's family name ;)

Maybe you'll also notice that this bento is quite low on carbs. That's because I also brought two sandwiches. And since I always do that I will have to try to keep my bento's this way. But it's not easy!

The real contest was between Kader Abdolah and Harry Mulisch, and Mulisch finally won. It's interesting that an immigrant came so close to winning the prize for Best Dutch Book ever!

I am now reading Publieke werken so I should be able to finish my challenge before the end of 2007. But because I had left some of the thicker books until last and I didn't feel much like picking them up, I am participating in an international Bookcrossing challenge: the SIY (Set It Yourself) challenge. It helps motivate to complete my challenge - I don't think I would have managed otherwise!

Moving makes hungry (bento's 32 and 33)

Thursday and Friday were moving days in the office. For me, Friday was the first day at the new office. I brought a bento with side dishes since I didn't know yet how hungry I would be from all the hard labour, nor if I would be able to get any food around the building (it's not located near town anymore). But there seems to be a canteen that I can go check out next week.

Contents:

corn with several herbs
boiled egg
pine nuts and sun-dried tomato for the pasta salad side dish
carrot
again a container of humus and mojo Palermo with capers (I am almost out of the mojo that my mother in law brought us from La Palma)
mini crackers and bounty
salt & pepper for the egg
sesame nibbles
nut mix
and two pickles rolled in fake meat slice.

On the side some yogurt with prune jelly (homemade by my mother in law).

Contents of Thursday 8 November's bento:
